Our bodies require glucose as a form of fuel so that we can keep up with our activities. Our bodies only use the required amount of glucose, and the extra glucose is stored in the liver. The liver creates glucose whenever our body needs it. In certain diseased conditions, the excess glucose is not stored in the liver and keeps circulating in the body. People with untreated diabetes have high blood glucose levels. The 75 gram glucose tolerance test or GTT test measures the body's reaction to glucose. In the glucose tolerance test, the body is administered 75 g of a sugary solution, and sugar levels are assessed one, two, and three hours later. The oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) is the most common form of GTT.

A doctor may recommend this test

To detect diabetes

To detect Gestational diabetes during pregnancy

Before starting the test, first, blood is drawn from the veins and labelled as basal. The next step will require consuming a liquid containing 75 grams of glucose. Following the solution, blood will be drawn again every 30 to 60 minutes. The GTT test might last up to two to three hours.

Fasting -- 60 to 100 mg/dL (3.3 to 5.5 mmol/L) 1 hour -- Less than 200 mg/dL (11.1 mmol/L) 2 hour -- Less than 140 mg/dL (7.8 mmol/L) is normal

Between 141mg/dL and 200 mg/dL (7.8 to 11.1 mmol/L) indicates impaired glucose tolerance

A value of 200 mg/dl (11.1mmol/L)or more indicates diabetes

Abnormal glucose tolerance is an earlier sign of diabetes than abnormal fasting glucose.
Note: Certain stress on the body, like trauma, stroke, heart attack, or surgery, can raise the blood glucose level.
